Black Powder Shooting
Black powder, commonly called "gunpowder", was the primary propellant for firearms from its invention up until the introduction of smokeless powder in the late 19th century. It is a mechanical mixture of saltpetre, charcoal and sulphur and is well known for the copious quantities of white smoke it produces when burned.
The collection and shooting of original and replica black powder firearms is an interesting and informative pastime enjoyed by many, including some of our members. Many competitions for black powder firearms are held under the auspices of the governing bodies, The Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain and the National Rifle Association. The internationally acclaimed Trafalgar Meeting at Bisley in the autumn has competitions for all types of black powder firearms, including matchlock, flintlock, percussion and black powder cartridge.
Our club has access to ranges where black powder firearms may be used and offers training in their safe handling and use. We can also advise on applying for the necessary licence to acquire and use black powder.
